Antique Japanese Satsuma coffee set by Nikko
This is a lovely antique Japanese Satsuma coffee set for six made by the Nikko company around the 1920s. This set is the old demitasse size and c. Omprises a lidded coffee pot, lidded sugar bowl and lidded milk jug and six small, semi-globular cups with matching saucers.

Each of the 15 pieces is well decorated with a pheasant sitting amongst branches of cherry blossoms in a cherry tree, with peony flowers below. Pink, blue, green, orange and lilac with a few red highlights. Each of these colours is over-gilded. He lids of the pot, bowl and jug have a different type of decoration to the rest.

Each lid has two sets of opposing black diamonds and red fans set on a orange-yellow ground and then over-gilded with various diapers. They are the correct size and (more importantly) the top and rim borders (which are an elegant gilt on black) match perfectly on all pieces. You can check the photos! The coffee pot is around 17 cm (about 6.75 inches) tall and over 8 cm (3.25 cm) in diameter. The saucers are just under 12 cm (nearly 4.75 inches) in diameter.

The cups are just over 6 cm (nearly 2.5 inches) in diameter and 4.5 cm (nearly 1.75 inches) tall. On the base, for the Nikko company. This set is complete and is in excellent condition. Eventually, I saw one tiny chip on the rim of one saucer, which has been reglued (the only restoration) and is almost invisible.

There are no chips to any of the lids, which can be a bit delicate. There are no visible hairlines. And, the whole set is very clean, with almost no staining, which can be a real problem with old Satsuma pieces, particularly tea and coffee sets. I encourage you to do the same!

I think you will find that when you take quality, condition (chips, breaks and staining), completeness. Missing pieces, mis-descriptions as to age (don't believe every "Meiji" that you read) and decorators into account. 15-piece demitasse coffee set decorated by.
