Absolutely Stunning and Rare Antique Japanese Hododa Satsuma Kogo Incense Box

Absolutely Stunning and Rare Antique Japanese Hododa Satsuma Oval Kogo Incense Box. A really wonderful and rare antique Japanese Hododa Satsuma oval pottery kogo box with lid. Beautifully and intricately decorated to the exterior with multiple panels of artwork surrounded by a very detailed typical Satsuma design. The interior of the box and the lid features two more hand-painted designs. The box is of an oval form supported on four legs.

To the base, the box bears Hododa marks underneath the Shimazu crest and is likely from the late 19th century (possibly early 20th). A stunning and very rare piece. The box is in very good condition other than three small chips to the outer bottom rim of the lid and a further chip to the inside rim.

There is also the usual wear to the gilt in places (as is always the case). The box is 20cm wide, 15cm deep, 8.5cm tall. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like further details or pictures.
