This is a very attractive Kyoto Satsuma koro by Shuzan. Decorated and painted, with two large rectangular reserves showing domestic scenes of families at a tea party in a stone garden or strolling in a garden outside a house and two smaller floral reserves beneath the handles. The reserves are set in a floral diapered ground with simple, narrow geometric diaper borders. This globular koro is set on 3 squat feet and is 130 mm high. The ear handles are modelled as cross sections of lotus root.
The earthenware paste is very white and fine and the Satsuma crackle glaze is fine and even. There are a number of Satsuma decorators pronounced as "Shuzan".
The kanji in this Shuzan signature are for a well-known and respected Kyoto decorator, who also worked for the Yasuda company. Dating is probably 1910-20, late Meiji or early Taisho. Very good quality, very well decorated, no damage. However, unfortunately the lid is missing.
