Japanese satsuma lobed jar and cover, Meiji period, 19th century, decorated with two panels, one enclosing a shi-shi dog with branches of flowering peony issuing from rockwork, the other with swallows in flight above crashing waves, all against a ground with two ho-ho birds in flight, the cover and jar with bands of lappets enclosing flower sprays and scrolling foliage, the cover with small butterflies and a web of diaper pattern surrounding the finial, with the shimazu-crest and gold mark to base, height: 10 1/4in. 26cm; condition: shallow chip to inner rim of jar, drill hole to base, and small chip to inner rim of cover.
