Large Antique late 19-early 20th C Japanese Satsuma lidded Vase Gilded jar Japan Meiji Period with a fabulous design, in excellent condition. The appraiser told her that the characters she could see meant "left side, " and that the vase was probably originally part of a 3-piece set, including two vases and a center bowl. The colors and the gilding on this vase are exquisite, and there are no cracks or chips.
There is a small rough place under one of the "feet, " but it is in the original shaping of the clay. There is some of the usual light crazing one sees in old pieces.
Perhaps the gilding covers or protects the original glaze, as the crazing is not as noticeable as it often is. There is the occasional place where a bit of the color has worn off (see photos), but overall this vase is in excellent shape, with interesting and varied paintings of various people and scenes. Vase stands 16 inches tall including the lid (13 inches tall without the lid), and is 8.5 inches across, including handles, at its widest point.
