Japanese Meji Period Satsuma Vase c1885
Japanese Meji period satsuma vase. Japan - possibly Satsuma province although most likely decorated in Kobe or Yokohama. Imari palette with lflowers, reeds, and butterflies.

16.2cm height, 8cm diameter. Excellent, no chips or cracks - crazing as expected. Satsuma ware was originally dark plain clay produced in Satsuma province typically used for simple peasant wares or the Buddhist tea ceremony. In the 19th century the wares became progressivley complicated in decoration and were often decorated away from the Satsuma province. These newer designs became popular in the European market and an industry grew up for a new type of "Satsuma" ware for export.

These new designs, like this example, were generally of ivory ground with elaborate imari palette decoration. Trust is always an issue when dealing online and we are fortuitous in that we have our own premises, the Pantiles Arcade in Tunbridge Wells (open Tuesday to Saturday) and you are most welcome to visit.
