Japanese Satsuma Ware Vase Kyo-Yaki Kyoto with Females & Birds Gensei Yasuda

A large late 19th century Japanese Satsuma ware vase. It is painted with large characters around the body including an intriguing person with feline type face. The rim has a repeating pattern in blue & turquoise. The base is unmarked but it is signed to the side. The mark is in very poorly formed script but appears to be for Yasuda Gensei who went on to found the Kyoto Tojiki Goshi Kaisha in 1896 using the famous Yasuda logo.

Interestingly it is also partially signed to the inner base. Minor wear and gilt rubbing, fine crazing as appropriate for Satsuma ware. Two firing faults to the rim, with either some copper oxide or glaze contamination. Firing flaw to behind of one lady (image 2) with a fragment of pottery embedded and removing a section of glaze (from an explosion of another nearby pot in the kiln during firing). Other general potting and glaze flaws.

Rim left unglazed and interior has not been glazed all the way down. Height: 24.6 cm (9 3/4 inch).

Width: 14.5 cm (5 3/4 inch). Weight: 1360 grams (before packing). If for any reason you are unhappy with your item please let us know as soon as possible, and we will do our best to put things right.
