Large Meiji Japanese Nishida Satsuma Pottery Vase Warrior & Martial Arts Figures

A large Meiji period Japanese satsuma ware vase. It features a warrior on horseback and a man practising martial arts. It is from the Kyoto region and it is marked around the lower part of the body for Nishida. Most satsuma ware is marked to the base but there are other examples of Nishida using a less conventional form. The blue and turquoise enamel pattern is also unusual with the streaked form, the enamel is also in relief and stands proud of the body.

The lid has a large decorated knop which was made separately to the lid, the join lines still being visible post glazing and firing. A good sized piece large enough to be a feature item. Generally good for period, wear is restrained and most of the gilt remains with some rubbing at the rim etc as expected. Short faint hairline to the rim.
