Lot Of 3 Japanese Wataya sei Tsukuru Kutani Satsuma Porcelain Plates
We are delighted to offer this lot of 3 Japanese Kutani eggshell porcelain cabinet plates of circular, dished form with multi-lobed scalloped rims. They are hand decorated in overglaze enamels and gilding with two courtesans with their maids and attendants parading through the Yoshiwara (pleasure district), all within a border of lappets and diapers.

Each plate is unique as each was hand painted individually. This gorgeous group would enhance the collection of those who seek fine quality with a discerning eye. Having been kept in a cabinet, these plates are in very good antique condition with no observable chips, cracks, breaks or repairs. They measure approximately 7.25. Kutani porcelain is a style of Japanese porcelain first established by Got Saijir, a member of the Maeda clan, who set up a kiln in the village of Kutani (now part of the city of Kaga).

The porcelain style is known for multiple colorssuch as greens, blues, yellows, purples, and redsand bold designs covering most of the surface of each piece. The word Kutani means Nine Valleys. The two characters that make up the word Kutani consist of the character for "nine", ku and "valley". Since Kutani is a place, almost all pieces marked Kutani were decorated there even if by any of the many manufacturers or trading shops, as opposed to just a single factory. We appreciate your careful review of the photos as they tell so much more than we can articulate; and ask that you zoom in for a closer look at any and all condition issues.
