Satsuma-yaki is a type of Japanese pottery originally from Satsuma Province, southern Kyushu. The usually elaborately decorated pieces began to be produced in the nineteenth century and their gilded polychromatic enamel overglaze designs soon appealed to the taste of western consumers. The mirrored panels on these small vases depict two ladies looking at a small child and two noblemen relaxing.
