Rare antique Japanese Satsuma flower vase by Kinkozan, Meiji period

A rare example of a large, tall Satsuma ceramic vase decorated with large bright flowers and butterflies with gilding. The polychrome enamel patterns, gilded dragon-shaped handles and minute details of the graceful flowers and butterflies are all evidence that it was painted by a master craftsman. The Kinkozan family has been associated with pottery since 1645.

By the 1850s Kobayashi Sobei (1824-84), Kinkozan Sobei (artist's name Kinkozan IV), had begun exporting its products along with the Kyoto-based maker Taizan VIII. The market was America in particular. In her book "Satsuma Treasury, " Sandra Andacht quotes a visitor to the Kinkozan factory in the 19th century as saying that the same glazed pots were decorated in two styles, one called Kyoto or Awati, the other Satsuma.

Minor wear to the gilding, commensurate with age. Otherwise very good condition - no chips, cracks or hairlines. Please look carefully at the pictures as they are part of the description.
