It was designated as a national traditional craft in January 2002. It was started by potters from the Ri dynasty who were brought back from Korea by the feudal lord at the time, Yoshihiro Shimazu, during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea (Bunroku and Keicho eras). It is a type of pottery that developed under the protection of the Satsuma domain. In 1867 (Keio 3), the Satsuma clan exhibited this pottery at the Paris World's Fair, which fascinated Europeans and made the name ``SATSUMA'' famous around the world.
