Satsuma Ware Vase with Japanese Immortal On Black Ground Meiji Period c1890

Japanese Satsuma Ware Immortal Vase. A late 19th century Japanese satsuma ware vase of globular form with short neck and rolled rim.

It has a black gloss glaze to the body and is decorated with an immortal, perhaps Daikokuten. The other side features a boy holding aloft what appears to be a gold coin. The upper shoulders are decorated with formal patterns including cells and diapers.

Generally good, some small spots of glaze loss to the body. Wear to the gilt in places. A few tiny glaze pits from firing as typical for such items. Crazing as expected for satsuma, some of the crazing has browned to the rim and base. Height: 18 cm (7 1/8 inch). Width: 14.5 cm (4 inch) across body. Weight: 704 grams (before packing).
