Scarce Meiji Period Antique Satsuma Garden Seat; Foo Dog Handles; Nr. Striking large and finely decorated Japanese Satsuma antique garden seat in baluster form with raised detail throughout. The side has handles in dragon-dog head form. The sides of the seat are profusely decorated with exceptionally detailed figures.
The dogs are holding rings in their mouths, which have long intertwined and knotted cords that work down the side of the seat, ending in stylized tassels. Finely crackled cream-colored glaze on an earthenware body.Raised enameled details, with heavy gilt over-painting. Moderate wear to the gilding. There are two firing cracks about 3 long at either side, at the point where the side of the top meets the curved of the sides. No nicks, dings, cracks or other issues. The top is 11 in diameter.
